    De l'emballage au transport en passant par la santé, les plastiques font partie des matériaux les plus répandus dans notre économie. L'industrie mondiale du plastique est évaluée à 600 milliards de dollars et emploie des millions de personnes. Mais la pollution par le plastique est devenue une crise majeure, avec 8 millions de tonnes qui finissent chaque année dans les océans. Sur les côtes de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, environ 80 % des déchets plastiques sont mal gérés, ce qui pose de plus en plus de problèmes aux populations, à l'économie et à l'environnement côtier et marin.

    Many African countries would also benefit from accessing the World Bank’s full range of finance instruments, which spans grant financing, debt, and equity financing. Technical assistance or grant financing is often required to undertake the analytics and diagnostics needed to identify policy improvements.

    Governance also plays an important role. Coastal areas and territorial waters are under the jurisdiction of several agencies that lack sufficient coordination and incentives to improve the management of natural resources. Marine spatial planning is an important tool to improve such governance.
