Coastal Resilience: Field Mission to Benin and Togo Showcases WACA ResIP Program's Impact
From December 8 to 13, 2024, influencers and journalists from WACA ResIP target countries participated in a field mission to Benin and Togo. Organized by the WACA Regional Support Bureau (WACA BAR), the visit highlighted tangible coastal protection solutions and promoted knowledge-sharing among participating countries.
Highlights from Benin
The mission began in Benin, where the delegation was welcomed by the Integrated Project Management Unit (IPMU) of WACA-Benin. A presentation on local achievements was followed by a visit to the Togbin-Adounko mangrove, an ecotourism success story enabled by WACA investments. The initiative demonstrated how ecological preservation and economic development can coexist.
The delegation also toured grey infrastructure projects in Grand-Popo, including breakwaters and groins, which protect coastal communities from erosion and flooding. Beneficiaries shared testimonials about the positive impacts on their safety and livelihoods.
Insights from Togo
In Togo, participants observed coastal protection works along the transboundary segment between Agbodrafo and Aného. These projects stabilize beaches while safeguarding local ecosystems and communities, underscoring the effectiveness of WACA ResIP investments.
The delegation also visited Mome Katihoé, where women involved in palm nut processing showcased income-generating activities supported by the program. These initiatives empower women economically while improving the living conditions of coastal populations.
Regional Collaboration for Coastal Resilience
The field mission provided an opportunity to share best practices and foster collaboration among WACA ResIP countries. Participants praised the mission's organization and its emphasis on regional cooperation to tackle common environmental challenges.
The mission also generated significant media coverage, raising awareness among decision-makers and local populations about protecting coastal areas. These efforts aim to inspire continued investment in coastal resilience and strengthen partnerships for sustainable development in West Africa.
