Côte d’Ivoire: Income-Generating Activities as a Pillar of Community Resilience of Grand-Lahou

Coastal erosion and climate change have placed immense pressure on Grand-Lahou and Côte d'Ivoire communities, threatening livelihoods and ecosystems. The WACA Project tackles these challenges not only through physical interventions but also by empowering communities economically. Its Income-Generating Activities (IGA) initiative, a program's cornerstone, has transformed lives, bolstered economic resilience, and strengthened social cohesion for 1,219 individuals across 416 beneficiaries. The WACA Project offers a sustainable pathway to combat environmental and economic vulnerabilities by supporting activities like market gardening, fishing, and artisanal trades.

A Structured and Inclusive Approach

The IGA initiative follows a rigorous and inclusive methodology to ensure maximum impact. The consortium of International Consulting Group and Ivoire Conseil International led the identification and selection of beneficiaries under the supervision of the environmental and social safeguard unit and the monitoring and evaluation team. This process emphasized transparency and fairness, ensuring the support reached those most in need.

The program provided training in technical and managerial skills tailored to beneficiaries' projects to ensure their success. Following this, 259 individuals and 147 associations received funding and equipment to pursue income-generating activities such as livestock farming, fishing, and small-scale agricultural enterprises.

Continuous Support Through Monitoring

The Monitoring and Evaluation Unit, under the leadership of Mr. IRO Marius, plays a crucial role in ensuring the success of these projects. Regular field missions are conducted to track progress, identify challenges, and offer tailored solutions in real time. Beneficiaries have expressed appreciation for this ongoing support, fostering trust and a sense of partnership.

"The close monitoring of IGAs gives us precise visibility into the impact of our interventions and allows us to adjust our strategy to better meet the population's expectations," says Mr. IRO Marius, highlighting the program's adaptability.

Stories of Transformation

The impact of IGAs is tangibly reflected in the stories of beneficiaries. One such example is DAN Yole Jeanne, a trader from N'ZIDA, who expanded her business with WACA's support. "With the support of the WACA Project, I was able to expand my business and increase my income. Today, I can afford to send my children to school and provide for my family," she shares.

Testimonies like hers, available on WACA Côte d'Ivoire's YouTube channel, demonstrate the tangible difference this initiative is making in the lives of individuals and communities.

A Core Component of Coastal Resilience

The Income-Generating Activities initiative lies at the heart of WACA's strategy for coastal resilience. Beyond providing economic opportunities, it fosters social cohesion, empowers communities, and enhances their ability to adapt to climate challenges.

"IGAs build economic resilience while restoring dignity and hope to populations facing critical situations," explains Project Coordinator Prof. KASSI Jean Baptiste.

Through innovative and inclusive efforts like IGAs, the WACA Project is redefining coastal resilience, offering communities in Grand-Lahou a brighter and more sustainable future.
