The first groynes begin to emerge on the Agbodrafo shoreline

Construction works on the initial coastal protection groynes have begun along the beach of Agbodrafo. Two groynes are currently being built simultaneously to accelerate overall progress. The works are being carried out by Boskalis, a Dutch company specialized in coastal protection, with proven experience including the transboundary interventions between Togo and Benin.

According to Jasper Bakker, Project Director at Boskalis, operational works started on 1 November 2025 with the construction of the first two groynes, following the preparation and stockpiling of the necessary rock materials. Construction is progressing from West to East. At the same time, a floating excavator is being used to break the beach rock, facilitating the opening of each groyne into the sea.

The targeted section covers 7 kilometers of coastline, and the estimated construction time for each groyne is three weeks.

In total, 22 groynes will be built between Gbodjomé, Agbodrafo and Goumoukopé by the end of 2026, thanks to the combined efforts of the Togolese Government and its technical and financial partners, including the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), Invest International and the World Bank, under the WACA program.

This major work represents an important step in protecting the coastline and reducing the vulnerability of coastal communities exposed to marine erosion.
