Gambia Adopts New National Disaster Risk Management Policy After 12-Year Gap, Backed by WACA Funding

The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and stakeholders have validated The Gambia National Disaster Risk Management Policy 2024-2033, marking the end of a twelve-year gap without a disaster management policy. The WACA Project funded the policy's development, which involved extensive national and community consultations.

“This National Disaster Risk Management Policy and strategy will serve as a blueprint for disaster prevention, preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery from disasters in The Gambia,” said Sanna Dahaba, the Executive Director of NDMA. “It is imperative that the document is fit for purpose and… strengthens the resilience of communities to external shocks, reducing vulnerability and exposure to disasters.”

The West Africa Coastal Areas Resilience Investment Project II (WACA ResIP II) has supported this policy as its first initiative in The Gambia. This effort aligns with WACA's broader mission to strengthen institutions, build resilience, and advance national disaster risk management strategies.
