La Voix du Littoral, Mauritania’s First Media Outlet Dedicated to the Coast

In less than two years, La Voix du Littoral—born from a partnership between WACA Mauritania and Radio Mauritanie—has established itself as the country’s first media outlet entirely dedicated to coastal issues. Since October 2023, nearly one hundred programs have been produced and broadcast in national languages (Hassanya, Pulaar, Soninké, and Wolof), at a pace of four per week. These programs address topics related to the environment, public health, and the impacts of climate change, while also giving communities a platform to voice their concerns.

The interactive nature of the programs fosters direct dialogue with local authorities. In July, for instance, the mayors of El Mina and Sebkha, along with their delegations, visited the station to discuss the challenges faced by their coastal municipalities. In August, the team traveled to Diawling National Park to record several broadcasts and interviews, including with the park’s director and the coordinator of the RBDTS Project.

Official recognition of La Voix du Littoral came on March 10, 2025, during a joint visit by the Minister of Communication and the Minister of Environment. Since then, several partners—including the RBDTS Project and SALN—have considered collaborating with the station to strengthen community awareness on coastal issues. The Director General of Radio Mauritanie has also announced the upcoming construction of a dedicated headquarters for La Voix du Littoral at the Port of Tanit, 60 km from Nouakchott.

Building on these achievements, La Voix du Littoral is already positioning itself as a strategic communication platform for the future WACA+ project, scheduled to begin in 2026. With its strong community ties and recognized role in public awareness, the station is set to become a key pillar of communication on the blue economy and coastal resilience in Mauritania.
