Protecting Nouakchott: Mauritania Seals Critical Coastal Breaches
Mauritania is stepping up efforts to protect its coastline from the growing threat of erosion and marine intrusion. On March 10, 2025, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, alongside partners from the West Africa Coastal Areas Management Program (WACA), led an inauguration ceremony to mark the successful closure of three critical breaches in the coastal dune barrier protecting Nouakchott.
These works are part of a broader strategy supported by WACA to enhance coastal resilience across Mauritania. Along Nouakchott’s shoreline, 21 breaches had been identified, posing increasing risks to nearby communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems. The sealing of the most severe breaches is an important first step to stabilize the coastline, reduce flood risk, and protect livelihoods.
The event also celebrated the power of community engagement in advancing coastal protection efforts. Local journalists were recognized for their contributions to raising awareness about environmental challenges and the importance of preserving the coastline for future generations.
WACA remains committed to supporting Mauritania and its coastal communities with nature-based solutions, infrastructure investments, and knowledge-sharing to build a more resilient and sustainable future.
