Regional Press Visit: WACA highlights its results in Mauritania
The WACA BAR organized a regional press visit in Mauritania, bringing together journalists and content creators from seven WACA ResIP countries, in collaboration with the WACA Project Implementation Unit (UGP Mauritania).
The mission aimed to showcase the results achieved in the country, strengthen media production on coastal resilience, and raise public awareness of issues related to erosion, flooding, and climate change. Throughout the visit, participants explored key project interventions, including the stabilization works at the Nouakchott breach—an essential effort to reduce the risk of coastal inundation and protect the capital. They also met with communities engaged in income-generating activities in Riadh, Bénichab and Sebkha, illustrating the programme’s tangible impact on livelihoods and household resilience.
The mission provided an opportunity to engage with the municipal authorities of Tevragh Zeina, Sebkha and El Mina, who are actively involved in coastal management and reducing the vulnerability of shoreline communities. The delegation also visited the port of Tanit, a strategic infrastructure supporting artisanal fisheries.
A highlight of the visit was the discovery of the Coastal Radio Station, supported by the programme and now an essential communication tool since 2023, with more than one hundred broadcasts produced in four national languages to benefit coastal populations.
The visit generated significant regional media coverage, including audiovisual reports, press articles, radio interviews and a wide range of digital content—videos, reels, TikTok clips and institutional posts—widely relayed across participating countries. This momentum helped strengthen WACA’s regional communication network and highlighted ongoing efforts in climate resilience and integrated coastal management.
Building on this regional approach, the WACA BAR will soon organize another press visit in Côte d’Ivoire, focusing on the coastal protection works in Grand-Lahou.
