Senegal: WACA supports reforestation on the Langue de Barbarie
From 26 August to 3 September 2026, the WACA-Senegal Project supported the reforestation camp of the Langue de Barbarie National Park (PNLB) in Saint-Louis. The campaign coincided with the official launch of celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of three protected areas: the Langue de Barbarie National Park (PNLB), the Saloum Delta National Park (PNDS) and the Madeleine Islands National Park (PNIM), which are among Senegal’s most emblematic and strategic coastal natural sites.
This 5th edition saw the planting of casuarina (filao) trees in the northern part of the Langue de Barbarie and the regeneration of mangrove areas with Rhizophora and Avicennia species. The conventional nurseries set up beforehand were used for these operations. Participants also applied mangrove restoration techniques learned during an exchange visit to Benin and Togo.
These activities brought together park staff, eco-guards, young people and local communities. They strengthened participants’ technical skills and produced new seedlings to continue reforestation work.
For four years, WACA-Senegal has supported the PNLB by financing reforestation campaigns, setting up nurseries and building the capacity of local stakeholders. These interventions contribute to ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation and stronger coastal resilience to erosion.
