Measuring toxic chemicals in human tissues is invaluable in confirming exposure levels and driving public health protection measures. A human health risk assessment (HRA) for plastic particle pollution is currently not possible due to lack of data on both toxicological hazard and human exposure.

Research into the human health impacts of plastic to date have focused narrowly on specific moments in the plastic lifecycle, from wellhead to refinery, from store shelves to human bodies, and from disposal to ongoing impacts as air pollutants and ocean plastic.
