WACA Empowers Gambian Youth at Local Conference on Climate Change

The WACA Project partnered with young climate advocates to host the Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change (LCOY) in The Gambia, empowering over 200 participants to shape local climate action. The conference, held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Center from 14–15 September 2024, highlighted the Kotu Stream as a focal point for discussions on building community resilience to climate change.

A major conference segment focused on the WACA Project's objectives and activities along the Kotu Stream. Participants engaged in a guided tour of the Stream, gaining firsthand insight into the project's efforts to enhance environmental protection and community resilience. This experience spurred dynamic discussions among the youth about how to further develop local climate solutions.

Haddijatou Ceesay, LCOY The Gambia Coordinator, emphasized the importance of the project’s support:
"The WACA Project generously contributed 75% of our funding, underscoring its commitment to environmental causes and the ambitions of today's youth. The project team not only shared detailed insights about their activities but also led a tour of the Kotu Stream, providing a unique learning opportunity for all participants."

Following the conference, delegates crafted a National Youth Statement outlining their demands and recommendations for addressing the climate crisis. This statement was submitted to the Minister of Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources ahead of COP29, marking a significant step in integrating youth perspectives into national climate policy.
