The Tannou Crocodile Pond: A New Ecotourism Destination in Benin, Enabled by the WACA Project

Nestled in the Kissamey district of Aplahoué commune, the Tannou Crocodile Pond is emerging as must-visit ecotourism destination. Through the WACA Benin project, this unique natural site is being revitalized to to promote local heritage while improving the livelihoods of surrounding communities.

Key enhancements include the construction of a management facility for the Tannou Community Biodiversity Conservation Area (ACCB), the development of two ponds, and the installation of a walkway and two observation towers. These investments not only restore the crocodiles’ natural habitat but also promote sustainable, wildlife-based tourism.

The impact on local communities is profound. The creation of the ACCB has empowered surrounding villages to take an active role in natural resource management, with five village committees established to ensure participatory and inclusive governance. Concurrently, biodiversity conservation campaigns have fostered greater coexistence between residents and local wildlife, including the crocodiles.
