Gorée Protected: Coastal Protection Works Near Completion

Gorée Island is one of West Africa's most iconic heritage sites — rich in history, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and long exposed to the growing threat of coastal erosion. Under the WACA ResIP Senegal Project, coastal protection works are now in their final stretch. As of 31 March 2026, the overall completion rate stands at 82%, with delivery expected by 30 June 2026.

Two breakwaters are under construction. The eastern breakwater, stretching 390 metres, is nearly complete, while the western breakwater — the larger of the two at 900 metres — has reached 82% completion. Together, they will form a durable shield against wave action and erosion, protecting the island's buildings, beaches and infrastructure for generations to come.

The project has also been responsive to the communities it serves. At the request of residents, the original design was revised to improve beach access and extend protection to the Mariama Bâ High School and the Gorée Mosque. An adjustment made mid-implementation — and one that speaks to the project's core approach: building with people, not just for them
