The National Assembly of The Gambia has passed the country's first Climate Change Act, a landmark piece of legislation that marks a major step forward in strengthening climate resilience and environmental governance. The Act was developed with support from the WACA Project as part of its broader efforts to strengthen The Gambia's policy and institutional framework for climate resilience and environmental protection.

The Act establishes a comprehensive legal framework for climate action in The Gambia, covering both mitigation and adaptation, as well as cross-cutting issues such as climate finance, technology transfer and capacity building. It marks an important milestone in translating the country's international climate commitments into national law and policy.

The adoption of the Climate Change Act was accompanied by a review of The Gambia Climate Change Policy, helping to ensure greater coherence between the country's legal and policy frameworks.

The Climate Change Act is one of several policy reforms supported by the WACA Project in The Gambia, alongside the National Land Policy, the Rainwater Harvesting Policy, the revision of the Environmental Impact Assessment and Anti-Littering Regulations, and the National Disaster Risk Management Policy. Together, these reforms are strengthening the country's institutional and policy framework to address climate and environmental challenges.
