L'étude de la Banque mondiale sur Le coût de la dégradation des zones côtières en Afrique de l'Ouest montre qu'en 2017, les inondations, l'érosion et la pollution côtières seulement ont coûté environ 3,8 milliards de dollars, soit 5,3% du PIB de quatre pays: Bénin, Côte d'Ivoire, Sénégal et Togo.

Lérosion côtière est un phénomène naturel, accéléré par l’activité humaine. La stabilisation artificielle du littoral, la détérioration des formations naturelles, la construction d’infrastructures, l’extraction de matériaux et la multiplication des barrages privent ces zones côtières fragiles d’apports sédimentaires importants et favorisent l’érosion.

Les zones côtières ouest-africaines abritent d’importantes industries, notamment dans les secteurs de l’agroalimentaire, de l’exploitation minière et du tourisme, ainsi que des résidences urbaines et littorales, qui génèrent des déchets et de la pollution. De nombreuses zones du littoral ne disposent pas de systèmes adéquats de traitement des déchets et des eaux usées.

En cette semaine de la Journée mondiale de l’océan, rappelons-nous qu’un tiers de la population d’Afrique de l’Ouest vit sur le littoral. Elle est confrontée à la montée des eaux et à l’érosion côtière qui détruit chaque année entre 23 et 30 mètres de terre. Le Programme de gestion du littoral ouest-africain (WACA) aide les pays africains à y faire face en leur fournissant des ressources techniques et financières adaptées.

Les villages côtiers d’Afrique de l’Ouest font face au risque d’une catastrophe écologique. L’érosion et les inondations menacent les moyens de subsistance des communautés du littoral. Ce sont les conséquences les plus visibles du changement climatique le long des côtes d’Afrique de l’Ouest. Sans mesures adéquates d’atténuation et d’adaptation, le changement et la variabilité climatique mettront en péril les progrès durement acquis du développement en Afrique et contrecarreront les ambitions africaines de croissance et de réduction de la pauvreté.

Environ un tiers des habitants d’Afrique de l’Ouest vivent sur le littoral, qui génère près de 56 % du PIB de la région. Or, les villes et villages du littoral ouest-africains font face à une érosion et des inondations qui coûtent des vies, détruisent des habitations et pèsent sur la productivité et les revenus des habitants.
