L'étude de la Banque mondiale sur Le coût de la dégradation des zones côtières en Afrique de l'Ouest montre qu'en 2017, les inondations, l'érosion et la pollution côtières seulement ont coûté environ 3,8 milliards de dollars, soit 5,3% du PIB de quatre pays: Bénin, Côte d'Ivoire, Sénégal et Togo.

Tenir l’océan à distance en Afrique de l’Ouest

En cette semaine de la Journée mondiale de l’océan, rappelons-nous qu’un tiers de la population d’Afrique de l’Ouest vit sur le littoral. Elle est confrontée à la montée des eaux et à l’érosion côtière qui détruit chaque année entre 23 et 30 mètres de terre. Le Programme de gestion du littoral ouest-africain (WACA) aide les pays africains à y faire face en leur fournissant des ressources techniques et financières adaptées.

Le Togo est un pays d'Afrique de l'Ouest à faible revenu, bordé par le Ghana, le Burkina Faso et le Bénin. Bien que le taux de pauvreté du Togo ait baissé de 61,7 % en 2006 à 53,5 % en 2017, la pauvreté et les inégalités restent extrêmement élevées, notamment dans les zones rurales où 69 % des ménages vivaient sous le seuil de pauvreté en 2015. Le pays est divisé en cinq régions administratives et gère un système de république présidentielle unitaire avec un parlement.

La Gambie est un pays à faible revenu d'Afrique occidentale qui, à l'exception du golfe de Guinée, est bordé par le Sénégal. L'économie de la Gambie dépend de l'agriculture et du tourisme, qui représentent normalement environ 33 % et 20 % du PIB, respectivement. Sur le plan administratif, la Gambie est divisée en cinq régions, une municipalité et une ville (Banjul) et fonctionne selon un système de république présidentielle avec un parlement.

São Tomé et Príncipe est divisé en 6 districts administratifs et fonctionne selon un système de république semi-présidentielle.
